Building Technologies
The project developed Eco- Niwas Samhita (ENS Part I: Building envelope), India’s first energy efficiency code on residential buildings. The project supported BEE for the development of ENS and later supported its implementation through the development of compliance tool and ENS solution set documents. The ENS has also been mentioned as a key reference document in the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) 2019.
BEEP promoted passive technologies like external movable shading system for shading windows, insulation of building envelope and natural ventilation. It supported the development and testing of external movable shading systems (EMSyS), through a national design competition that resulted in the selection of 5 indigenous designs: subsequent development and testing of the prototypes. It also conducted market surveys to map the EMSyS products available in the market, carried out performance monitoring of two commercially available products and developed a policy paper to project the potential impact EMSyS can have on improving the thermal comfort and lowering space conditioning demand in the Indian residential building sector.
The project also built technical capacities of selected Indian labs to test building insulation materials through trainings and knowledge products.
It also developed a freeware, OpenFOAM based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, Vayu Pravah, to assess the natural ventilation potential in buildings.
