This position paper delves into the opportunities and challenges triggered by exponential rate at which affordable housing is being built in India, especially with the backdrop of the Government of India’s Housing for All program. While pointing out the need to look at the environmental impact of this growth, the paper also looks at the relationship between affordability and sustainability. Using the context of Rajkot city, this position paper studies the CapaCities Project as a case in point for strengthening the capacities of city authorities to plan and implement measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for coping with the effects of climate change.
